What impact do you want to have with your art?

I believe the art we surround ourselves with has a huge impact on our emotions. With my art I hope to evoke a sense of pride and familiarity.

Artists Statement

Through my art, I am able to express my delayed introduction of what it means to be of Mexican decent to me. Highlighting current events in the latinx community. The ability to express the pride I have for my heritage through painting allows me to show society the beauty of my culture and where I come from. With each piece, I link the beauty of the present social scene to our historical past. I take a critical view of social/cultural issues and give it a visual representation, may it be a face, a family, pattern, or a firme hyna in front of a ranfla. Each piece is equally a voice, a view, and an art that breaks the stigma of our culture and community.

Artists Biography

I’m Alex Zapata, a Chicano artist born in California, now living and working in Houston, TX utilizing the streets as a gallery. Different mediums allow me to depict different messages. The lowrider culture, activism, indigenous imagery, and social justice inspire my work. I believe the art we surround ourselves with has a huge impact on our emotions. With my art I hope to evoke a sense of pride and familiarity. Through strong female figures and a monochrome pallet I am focused on creating bold and pride inspiring work showcasing my childhood memories, identity, and heritage.
