What impact do you want to have with your art?
I consider myself a witness of my times. I would like my work to reflect our humanness transcending boundaries as gender, race, nationality, religion, politics, etc
ARTISTS STATEMENT

I was born and grew up in a family of artists and educators. For as long as I can remember, I have been enchanted by the practice -and idea- of making/creating things and inviting others to do so. To me, art means the almost sacred possibility of relating and communicating with others through autonomous languages. Art has allowed me to connect with peoples throughout time and across the world.

I have worked on drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, photography and collage. I have a fascination for paper and also for found printed images which I transform and deconstruct.

My work consists of poetic evocations of nature and culture usually made up by deconstructions and layers. Inner and outer attentiveness, guide me as I work. I do not start with a preconceived image in mind. The process has more to do with building it up as I engage in the making of each piece. Because materials are very relevant in my practice, each body of work is an exploration on the expressive potential of the media. I am inclined to work in series, I take up a theme and expand on it to exhaustion.

Artists Biography

Born in Paris, France, Carolina Otero is a Venezuelan visual artist based in Houston, Texas. A graduate of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City, Otero has long used reclaimed materials discarded books, catalogs, magazine clippings, reproductions of classic works of art, etc,  in combination with pastels, watercolor, pencils, ink and acrylic paint, in small and large-scale collages and mixed-medium compositions. She is currently working on printmaking.

In addition to her lifelong practice as a visual artist, Otero relishes teaching art to students of all ages, including other art educators. Her interest in learning creative processes linked to a variety of expressive means has led her to pursue independent studies related to pedagogy and human development wherever she happens to live and work.

Carolina Otero has had solo exhibitions at the Pinta Miami Art Fair 2017 (Pinta Platforms), GalerÌ_a Regina, Houston, French Alliance Gallery, GalerÌ_a Okyo, GalerÌ_a FÌ©lix and Sala Mendoza, Caracas, Venezuela; AsociaciÌ_n Ateneo de Aragua, Ateneo de Maracay, Venezuela; Galerie des 7 voies, Paris, France; Thereses Kunstsalong, Oslo, Norway.
