BORIMIX AFTERNOON TERTULIA: RICARDO ALEGRÍA REVISITED

Join us on November 9th, 2021 @ 6 PM EST, as we host a special BORIMIX Afternoon Tertulia – Ricardo Alegría Revisited. Ricardo Alegría was a key figure in the rescue of the historic-colonial complex of Old San Juan. His two biographers, Carmen Dolores Hernández and Pedro Reina will talk for the first time about his historical impact and revisit his legacy from the critical vantage point of the present. Journalist Ana Teresa Toro will be the moderator.
Carmen Dolores Hernández is a writer, researcher, biographer and journalist who has authored and/or edited several books on Spanish and Puerto Rican literature. She has written two biographies of prominent Puerto Rican personalities: anthropologist Ricardo Alegría and sociologist Sister Isolina Ferré. She is currently at work on a history of Puerto Rican writing in the United States. For forty years she wrote weekly book reviews for El Nuevo Día, a major Puerto Rican paper.
Pedro Reina Pérez is an award-winning historian and journalist specializing in contemporary Spanish Caribbean history, and the director of the Harvard Puerto Rico Winter Institute. He is a Full Professor of Humanities, and Arts and Cultural Agency and Administration at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras. Known for his publications on culture and current affairs as well as his work on cultural entrepreneurship, he is a contributing writer for El Nuevo Día (Puerto Rico), El País (Spain) and ReVista: Harvard Review of Latin America (US). Among his eleven books and edited volumes are Poeta del Paisaje(2013), El Arco Prodigioso (2009) and La Semilla Que Sembramos (2003).
Writer and journalist dedicated to exploring politics, colonialism, feminism and Caribbean cultures. Author of the novel Cartas al agua (Letters to the water), and the books of chronicles Las narices de los perros(Dog’s Noses) and El cuerpo de la abuela(The Grandmother’s Body). As well as the oral history book Un cuerpo propio: 40 años de Taller Salud and the long interview that became the book Vida, Patria y Verdad, with ex governor Alejandro García Padilla.
