Education For a New Race: Making Whites and Schooling the Mexican in Greater Juan Crow

February 24 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

What has been the historical relationship of public schools and education policy in creating race; in creating Whites? By looking at the experiences of ethnic Mexican communities in the Mountain West—Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and especially Wyoming—in the first half of the 20th Century(1917-1956), I argue that education policy was the apotheosis of racialization finalizing the boundaries of White and Non-Whites, specifically the Mexican and White races. In other words, schools made and were the architects of the White race.
