In the Shadow of the Florida Bar: Struggle and Adaptation of Cuban Exile Lawyers in Miami
November 17, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Presentation by Dr. Manuel A. Gómez, FIU College of Law, on:
The exodus that occurred during the first few years of the Cuban revolution brought to the U.S. more than 250 thousand people, mostly from the upper and middle strata of Cuban society. This early wave of immigrants included many lawyers who initially were under the impression that their stay in the U.S. would be temporary and hoped to return home as soon as the nascent communist regime was toppled. As it progressively became apparent that the situation in Cuba would not change, exile lawyers —most of whom had settled in Miami— sought to restart their professional occupations in the U.S. Despite significant support from the Florida legal community, most Cuban exile lawyers were not able to easily integrate into the local legal profession and remained in the shadow. This presentation will describe the struggle and adaptation of the Cuban legal diaspora in Miami, its impact on the local practice of law, and on the legal professions in general.
