Areas of Expertise:

  • Ancient Mexico
  • Heritage Communities
  • MFAH
  • Pre-Columbian Civilization

My current research involves two projects: 1) A history of the pre-Columbian civilization of the Gulf Coast of Mexico between the year 0 and 1000 CE, known as Classic Veracruz; 2) A major exhibition of the art of ancient Colombia (the latter at LACMA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in collaboration with the Museo del Oro, Bogotá, Colombia).

I am also the author of the all pre-Columbian and Latin American sections of the forthcoming A History of Art: A Global View published by Thames and Hudson.

I am project director of an upcoming National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for Higher Education Faculty on the teaching of Latinx art and culture in a museum context (University of Houston/Museum of Fine Arts, Houston-2021 or 2022, depending on the pandemic).
