Areas of Expertise:

  • African Diaspora in Latin American and the Caribbean
  • Ethnic Studies
  • Latin American History

My primary areas of training are Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and I am also interested in the social and labor history of Latin@s, and the development of their communities in the U.S.

I am currently researching two projects, both dealing with the Hispanic Caribbean: one is a joint project with colleagues in Spain, Colombia, and Puerto Rico that examines the impact of Spanish liberalism on Puerto Rico during the first half of the 19th century.  The other is a study of the historical ties between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic from pre-Columbian times to the end of the 18th century. This second project is a by-product of an IUPLR Working Group focused on the creation of the Spanish Caribbean field of studies that was led by Ramona Hernandez’s Dominican Studies Institute.
