I recently did a project exploring the impact of Hurricane Harvey on community college students and how they overcame this tragedy. The goal of my research is to highlight the strengths and assets that students utilize to succeed in college. I think it is important to focus on strengths and accomplishments rather than deficits and barriers. Too much of this has been the focus of research on marginalized populations. We need to move away from this deficit narrative particularly within the context of Latinx and other marginalized student groups.
